- Traffic Control
World-wide traffic
management systems regulate street traffic,
railway transportation, shipping and air traffic.
Cooperating electronic control units meter, control,
diagnose and manage a total system for modern
adaptive traffic control, and for that purpose they
exchange data with eachother. Controllers herein are
responsible for the data flow between control
centers, detectors, and sensors/transmitters.
The area of application for software-driven
controllers in traffic control is manifold. From
pedestrian traffic lights via medium-sized crossings
up to highly complex and networked control units at
traffic junctions and hubs. Working in combination
with systems for traffic surveillance and simulation
and/or systems for meteorologic data compilation
traffic control must be considered as a highly
complex and modular expandable data network.
The goal of interaction of such a lot of components
is effective and coordinated traffic operations for
best capacity utilization/load of the traffic
infrastructure. Additional aspects to be ideally
achieved are minimization of the energy consumption
and minimum waiting times due to stop and go
conditions. Amongst others the following procedures
are invoked:
- load-dependent program selection for traffic
lights, e.g. progressive signal system,
- in addition, particular signals could be
influenced, e.g. green periods in the time of
circulation and phase sequence adjustments,
- definition of increased speed lanes for public
transportation,
- tunnel control and adaptive lane assignment,
- integration of car-park routing systems and
maybe even
- the brightness of environmental lighting to be
tuned.
In order to do the adaptive traffic control with
orientation towards the overall traffic situation
and expectable circumstances these components are
combined with strategic units as well, e.g.
automatic permanent counting points, strategy
detectors, video cameras, theoretical traffic models
and simulations.
Often high costs for maintenance are raised in such
complex networks where each component must rely on
the others. All control units more or less dependent
on others, and it is most important to have all
controllers fulfill the latest state of the art.
Thus, it is a clearly understood demand that
controllers must be updated to new, corrected
software on demand. New formal definitions may
require changes on the controllers as well. And so,
this maintenance process typically takes a lot of
money for technical personal on side.

The adisoft solution is based on a special and
secure wireless data transmission mechanism for
mobile software distribution to real-time controller
networks in traffic control systems. It is
completely free of any dependencies from network
operators and providers as well as from the type of
physical data transfer media.
Concurrent and "silent" software updates can be run
and controlled by a central backoffice update unit
for all concerned controller devices. No technical
service is required on-site any more. The delivery
of the software updates is carried out via some
available wide-area network, e.g. available cable
networks and/or mobile and wireless networks like
WiFi, WiMAX, UMTS/HSDPA, GPRS, CDMA2000 or GSM. The
whole maintenance process is optimized; and cost
reductions up to 75% can be achieved.
The design of this innovative remote maintenance
solution based on mobile networks covers all
specific requirements from highly secured data
transfer up to real-time flash updates and roll-back
to earlier software releases in case of errors
during automatic system checks.
